about
Cayos is a collaborative effort between Architect/Musician Daniel Laburu and current U.S. Soldier/Musician Nick Reyes.
The first EP 'Souq' is about personal displacement and finding motivation in difficult circumstances.
Nick Reyes wrote his portion of the album in the army while in Kuwait and Iraq--using various field recordings--sources such as an M16 (Rifle), various sirens, horns, Ugandans, Humvees, MRAPS, choppers, gym equipment, and in other cases miscellaneous items bought at the Souq to make sounds with which helped him cope with detachment. By manipulating the sounds he heard everyday, he became more comfortable with them and felt more at home in his estranged environment.
Daniel cites Nick's experience as being just as profound for him in the making of this recording, but from another perspective. When he received 'nothing for hours in any direction' the name conjured up imaginations of the experiences Reyes was going through; the sounds and voices in the mixes having stories and situations behind them.
Laburu's contribution is the expression of his musical compliments to these experiences; a contribution that is driven by the imagination of something he could only visualize and yet never fully understand.
A 'souq' is an Arabic Market where everything is a negotiation.
This album was dedicated to the spirit of those negotiations.
